VIETNAM  WAR  POETRY

JOYCE LeBARON

Two of Many

I
JIMMY

I saw your name upon the Wall
And thought of you at seven, eight and nine
An only son, playing with my brothers.
I did not know you well
Or long.
But long enough and well enough
To ache and mourn.

II
JOHNNY

You were a rascal he told me,
A daredevil your friend said,
Fearless
Bold and bright. Now dead in Viet Nam’s night.
You would have liked his salute to you,
Complete with guns and flag. Motorcycle roaring desert wide,
The hot Mojave wind burning in his throat.
